The right season
This work is recommended to be performed in the Fall to Winter time frame. The leaves fall, sap retreats, and the tree enters its dormant season during this time, conserving its energy for Spring. This is the proper season to remove any branches without harming the tree or causing it any stress that could potentially kill it.
Trimming in the proper season also prevents the spread of disease and decreases the risk of an overabundance of "sucker limbs" that tend to make the tree very bushy in places it shouldn't be, since the tree is able to recover from the cuts while it isn't actively producing sap.
We do not top trees
Please note that we do not top trees. It is unhealthy and dramatically increases the risk of killing the tree. This is a long-gone practice that we do not condone due to the unnecessary stress it inflicts on the tree. We can gladly offer you a healthier trimming alternative within your budget. Questions people ask
When is the best time to trim?
Fall through winter, while the tree is dormant. The leaves are down so we can see the structure, the sap has retreated, and the tree recovers from the cuts before spring growth. Storm-damaged or hazardous limbs are the exception; those come off whenever they need to.
Can you trim limbs hanging over my roof or driveway?
Yes. Overhanging limbs are the most common trimming call we get. We rope them down in pieces so nothing lands on the roof, the gutters or the car.
Why won't you top my tree?
Topping cuts the main limbs back to stubs. The tree responds with a burst of weak sucker growth, it opens the wounds to decay, and it often kills the tree within a few years. We will trim it properly instead, and it will look better and last longer.
Do you clean up the limbs?
Always. Limbs are chipped and hauled, or cut and stacked if you want the wood. We blow off the roof, the driveway and the beds before we leave.
